Elephant Safari Drive at Minneriya & Kaudulla

A safari in Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks offers an incredible opportunity to witness the famed Sri Lankan elephant in its natural habitat, particularly during the dry season phenomenon known as "The Gathering." These two parks, located in Sri Lanka's North Central Province, are part of a larger elephant corridor and are known for their spectacular wildlife sightings.

The Elephant Gathering: A World-Class Spectacle

The main draw of a safari in this region is the annual elephant gathering. During the dry season, from June to September/October, hundreds of elephants from surrounding areas migrate to the banks of the large reservoirs in Minneriya and Kaudulla. They congregate to feed on the lush green grass that emerges as the water recedes and to drink and bathe in the remaining water. This event is considered one of the largest gatherings of wild Asian elephants in the world.

While Minneriya is often cited as the primary location for "The Gathering" from July to September, the elephants' movements are seasonal and depend on water levels. As the dry season progresses and water levels drop in Minneriya, the herds often shift to the Kaudulla National Park, especially from September to December. Ours safari guides are often aware of the elephants' current location, making it possible to choose the best park for your safari on any given day.

What to Expect on a Safari

  • Jeep Safari: The primary way to experience the parks is through a jeep safari. The jeeps are typically open-air, providing excellent visibility for wildlife viewing and photography.

  • Wildlife: While elephants are the main attraction, both parks are home to a diverse range of other animals. You may spot spotted deer, sambar deer, wild buffalo, and a variety of monkeys, including the purple-faced langur and toque macaque. Birdwatchers can also enjoy over 160 species, such as painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, and grey-headed fish eagles.

  • The Landscape: Minneriya National Park is centered around the ancient Minneriya Tank, a large reservoir of great historical importance. Kaudulla National Park also revolves around its own reservoir. The parks feature a mix of grasslands, scrubby forests, and wetlands.

  • Best Time to Go: The peak season for elephant sightings is from June to October, during "The Gathering." However, elephants can be seen year-round. Afternoon safaris (typically starting around 2:30 PM) are often considered the best for viewing elephants as they come to the reservoirs to drink and cool off. Morning safaris are also available and are great for birdwatching and spotting other animals.

  • Ethical Considerations: It's important to choose a safari operator that follows ethical guidelines. This includes maintaining a respectful distance from the animals, avoiding loud noises, and staying inside the vehicle at all times. Drones are not permitted inside the parks.

  • Best Time of Day

Afternoon Safari: This is generally considered the best time for a safari, especially if you want to see elephants. The safari typically starts around 2:30 PM or 3:00 PM and ends at sunset. The elephants come out of the forest in the cooler afternoon hours to drink and play in the water, and the light is perfect for photography.

Morning Safari: A morning safari (starting around 6:00 AM) is excellent for birdwatching and spotting other animals that are more active in the early morning. While you can still see elephants, the large herds are more reliably found in the afternoon.
